We went and looked. Here are the actual numbers other Idaho breeders charged, where ours sits, and why the cheapest listings you will find are not real dogs.

Most breeders will not tell you what anybody else charges. We think that is silly, so here is the market as we found it in 2026, with the sources named.

What Idaho breeders actually charge

So the honest range for a purebred Shiba Inu from a real breeder in the Treasure Valley is roughly $1,500 to $3,000, and the thing that moves a puppy up that range is almost entirely documentation: registration, health testing, and titles on the parents.

Why you will see Shibas advertised at $450

You will, and you should not buy one.

Shiba Inu is one of the most impersonated breeds online. Fake breeder websites, stolen photographs, and a puppy that does not exist are a documented and well-organised problem. The pattern is almost always the same: an unusually low price, then a request for a shipping or insurance fee by wire transfer, gift card or a cash app, and then silence.

Between the scams and the real breeders sits a middle band of $600 to $1,200 listings: adults being rehomed, mixes described as purebred, and puppies with no paperwork at all. Those dogs are real. They are just not what the listing says.

What you are actually paying for

The puppy is a puppy. The price is the work around it. Roughly in order of cost to the breeder:

• Health testing on the parents. A DNA panel runs about $160 a dog. A full OFA orthopaedic workup costs considerably more and takes months.
• Veterinary care before you ever see the litter. Prenatal care, whelping support if it is needed, then an exam, vaccinations and deworming for every puppy.
• Eight weeks of the breeder's life. Early Neurological Stimulation, weighing every puppy every morning, socialisation, and the round-the-clock first fortnight.
• The guarantee behind the dog. A written health guarantee is a real financial liability the breeder is taking on.
• Registration and paperwork. The cheapest line item, and the one buyers overweight.

A breeder who does none of this can sell at $800 and make more per puppy than one who does all of it at $2,500. That is the whole economics of it, and it is why price alone tells you very little without asking what is behind it.

Questions worth asking about price

When a breeder gives you a number, the useful follow-ups are:

• What health testing have both parents had, and can I see the results?
• What is the deposit, and what happens to it if the litter is small or I change my mind?
• Is there a written health guarantee, how long, and what does it actually pay out?
• What happens if I cannot keep the dog in five years?
• Which registry, and are both parents registered with it?

Any breeder who is annoyed by those questions has answered them.
